UPCOMING PROJECT: Trio A (Yvonne Rainer, 1966) Apprenticeship w/ Linda K. Johnson
Open Rehearsal: Feb 8, 2026, 11:30a @ PICA ANNEX
From Linda K: We will have a very playful and exploratory in-process showing of Trio A (1966), a historic work of post-modern dance of which I am a custodian and transmitter, on Sunday, February 8th in the PICA annex. The wonderful dance and experimental theater artists Noelle Stiles and Amber Whitehall, respectively, have been in a deep study of this work since last April. Our journey with this study has taken all the kinds of twists and turns that life has to offer and we are ready to charge the learning process a bit with an audience and open cleaning of the work. Noelle and Amber are at very different places in the learning and cleaning process so I think it will be a particularly generative time to witness their ongoing commitment to this work and to be in curiosity around all that this dance asks of its representative.
The gathering is at 11:30a at PICA and will last about 90 minutes. As part of the morning, we will screen the film of Yvonne performing the work in the 1970’s that Sally Banes made, we will perform the work several times and clean a section or two to the exacting requirements of the physical and conceptual ideas of the dance, and we will hold a conversation about the rigor of learning and performing the work with several of the other dance artists in our area that have learned the work from me - Linda Austin, Susan Davis (Lewis & Clark), and, finger crossed, Sarah Ebert from Eugene.
There will be bagels and brunch snacks.

Permissions to perform Yvonne Rainer’s Trio A (1966) are managed through a specific professional transmission process with authorized "transmitters" to ensure fidelity to the original choreography. The process typically involves learning and cleaning the dance, followed by approval for performance, but not for further teaching.
